Adopt Achilles

Brittany Spaniel · Male · Senior · 13 years

Achilles came on his own and decided to stay. As the gate was opening for a car to enter the property, he appeared out of nowhere and walked in right along with it. It was as if he had been passing by, spotted a party, and joined in. He was so happy he did not know what to do. He ran back and forth, asking for affection from everyone who was there that day. There was no way we were letting him leave. Carried by that joy of having found us, he kept pacing up and down for days, for months, greeting people and seeking affection. Every time he opened his eyes while resting and sensed that something was happening around him, he would get up immediately, as if that “party” he found on his first day was still going and he did not want to miss a moment. But Achilles is old. Very old. He has suffered strokes, he has dementia, he is completely deaf, and he has undergone treatment for leishmaniasis and for his liver. And while he still insists on walking around the shelter and asking for affection, his strength has faded. Now we have to protect him from this habit, because his heart cannot take much more when he gets overexcited and loses his sense of limits. He lives in the office, on the softest bed in the shelter, goes out for short breaks when things are calm, and enjoys the affection and attention of everyone. We do not know how much longer Achilles will be with us. No one can know that. What we do know is that his chances of being adopted are very small. Still, we will keep hoping, and we will give him the best care we can.

About Achilles

What life with Achilles looks like

Achilles is a medium-sized senior brittany spaniel dog waiting at Save a Greek Stray in Metsovo.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇬🇷Adopting from Greece

Greek shelters often partner with Northern European rescue groups for placements. Animals are sterilized, vaccinated, and chipped before adoption. Fees vary widely depending on whether the shelter is municipal or NGO-run.

Frequently asked

Adopting Achilles, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Achilles?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Save a Greek Stray handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Achilles on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Achilles if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Save a Greek Stray will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Achilles already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Achilles isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Save a Greek Stray early rather than rehoming privately; they know Achilles and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
