Joy

Mixed Breed · Female · 3 years

Joy spent her entire life in breeding, before being abandoned. She had never known the outside world or the essential references that build a confident dog. Collected by the Assistance to Animals Foundation, she joined the our shelter, in Gard. Since her arrival, Joy has struggled to adapt to her new environment. Very suspicious of humans, she has developed stereotypical behaviors, direct consequences of years of confinement. Everything is new to her, sometimes a source of anxiety: sounds, open spaces, interactions. At the shelter, the team shows infinite patience. To help Joy open up, she relies on the other dogs of the shelter. Because if some of them also carry their own wounds, they have this precious ability to help each other and pull themselves up. Littered by her fellow animals of the same species, Joy begins to discover games, meetings, the first glimmers of trust... and even cuddles. Joy still knows nothing about life. With humans and other dogs alike, she often doesn't know how to interact. But, day by day, she dares to step out of her comfort zone. If Joy remains a fearful dog, her fears can be soothed. When she feels safe, she becomes curious, playful, and gradually lets down her guard. Joy will need someone ready to move at her pace, with gentleness, observation, and kindness. Someone capable of introducing her to the world without rushing, respecting her vulnerabilities.

FR·Show original

About Joy

What life with Joy looks like

Joy is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Fondation Assistance aux Animaux in Paris.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Requires patient, gentle owner due to past trauma and behavioral issues from puppy mill background

🇫🇷Adopting from France

French refuges follow the SPA framework: adopters sign a cession contract that includes sterilization, vaccinations, microchip identification, and rabies passport. Fees are typically €150–€300. Many refuges work with rescue transport partners for cross-border placements.

Frequently asked

Adopting Joy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Joy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Fondation Assistance aux Animaux handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Joy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Joy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Fondation Assistance aux Animaux will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Joy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Joy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Fondation Assistance aux Animaux early rather than rehoming privately; they know Joy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (FR). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
