Adopt Aika

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 5 years

Aika is a special female dog with personality who seeks people to accompany her with calmness, clarity, and understanding through life. A home with exclusively adult people is important for her – children should not live in the household. She does not like cats. However, a pre-existing, confident, and well-behaved dog could be a beautiful support for her, provided there is mutual affection. Aika has grown up very self-determined and was long accustomed to making many decisions and taking responsibility. Since living at our animal shelter, she has learned how relieving consistent human leadership can be. During this time, she has learned to accept that her people take responsibility and manage situations, allowing her to increasingly relax and no longer have to keep everything in her sight. Initially, Aika meets strangers with skepticism. However, at the animal shelter, we have given her the opportunity to experience encounters calmly and without pressure. She does not have to make contact if she does not want to, but she can now handle the proximity of strangers well and remains calm. Even in unpleasant situations like veterinary examinations, she used to be concerned and insecure. Now, she has learned to accept such situations and cooperates pleasantly well. In everyday life, Aika is a pleasant companion. She walks beautifully on a leash and does not react to cyclists, strangers, or other dogs during walks. She only shows very little interest in hunting. With trusted familiar people, she is closely connected, orienting herself well to them and showing her playful, charming side. With other dogs, she can show interest in social contact when unleashed. Additionally, she is already quite good at being alone and travels comfortably in the car.

About Aika

What life with Aika looks like

Aika is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at BMT Tierheim Elisabethenhof in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Aika, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Aika?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. BMT Tierheim Elisabethenhof handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Aika on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Aika if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — BMT Tierheim Elisabethenhof will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Aika already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Aika isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with BMT Tierheim Elisabethenhof early rather than rehoming privately; they know Aika and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
