Aiko

Male · Adult · 5 years

At 90 cm at the shoulder, Aiko is a large specimen even for a Great Dane. His weight fluctuates between 68 and 70 kg. Therefore, we are urgently looking for adopters who are physically capable of handling this impressive male dog. When other dogs are in sight, Aiko’s leash manners aren’t very good— he tends to become quite agitated and still needs training to handle encounters with other dogs more calmly. It’s difficult to test or train his compatibility with other dogs, as even we, despite having so many dogs at the shelter, rarely have suitable social partners available. In principle, though, Aiko is generally quite people-oriented. He’s very friendly toward the animal caregivers and dog walkers, loves cuddling, often seeks close proximity to his trusted humans, and therefore ideally shouldn’t be left alone for long periods. Aiko already shows a delayed stance response in his hind legs and is receiving continuous pain medication. For this reason, we’d like to place him in a ground-floor home. In the long term, we must anticipate that Aiko’s musculoskeletal issues will likely worsen. Given his size, this will also mean correspondingly higher medication costs. Overall, Aiko is truly a wonderful dog who would love to live in a house with a yard; however, due to his strong bond with people and his short coat, he absolutely needs access to his family’s living space. A ground-floor apartment without a yard would also be conceivable in principle. Physically, Aiko needs regular walks to stay active— unfortunately, given his age, much more isn’t possible anymore. Otherwise, though, he’d enjoy some mental stimulation as well. According to his previous owner, Aiko was raised alongside cats and children and gets along well with them. If you’re interested in one of our dogs, please contact us preferably by email. In your email, describe how the dog would fit into your home and provide us with a phone number. One of our animal caregivers will then get in touch with you. Dog descriptions are based on observations made at the shelter or information provided by third parties and do not constitute guaranteed characteristics.

About Aiko

What life with Aiko looks like

Aiko is a large adult dog waiting at Tierheim Leipzig in Leipzig.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Aiko, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Aiko?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Leipzig handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Aiko on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Aiko if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Leipzig will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Aiko already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Aiko isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Leipzig early rather than rehoming privately; they know Aiko and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
