Adopt Akina

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Senior · 15 years

Age: Born 27.05.2018 Origin: From the Animal Shelter in Slovakia Akina is generally a loving dog and doesn't harm anyone without reason, but she has a few insecurities. Since I don't know her exact history, I can't say why or where they come from. She lacks trust in completely strangers and needs to build that up first. Akina has a somewhat picky eating habit in that she tries to steal food whenever she can, but she has no issues with her own food or her feeding spot. When strangers enter the house or property, she barks, but she is a quiet and calm dog in the house. She is well accustomed to being alone, managing several hours without issues, and she doesn't cause any problems in the house, is also house-trained. She knows many commands but is only moderately obedient; if she doesn't feel like it, she currently doesn't respond. If she feels too much pressure or is touched when she doesn't want to be, she shows it through growling and, in the strongest case, snapping. She has never actually bitten anyone, but one must know how to handle such behavior. We leave her alone when she doesn't want something. If you know all of this and she knows you, she is a loving dog. She demands a lot of affection and likes to cuddle. Akina is not compatible with other dogs, cats, or small animals. Children under 15 years old are not allowed in the household. Vaccinated: No, the vaccination status is not up to date. Akina lives in our house with our own garden, but in the new home, it doesn't need to be an own garden; several daily walks would be enough for her. What is important to me is that she gets a loving and competent new home. People should have some dog experience. Why must the animal move out?: I have a daughter who now walks and also actively goes to the dog. Unfortunately, there have already been two incidents where the dog growled and snapped at her. Given her character as described above, the risk is too high that something worse could happen. Additionally, my life situation has changed significantly in the last year. I am alone with my daughter, and I can no longer afford higher costs for the dog (e.g., vet bills) should something happen to her. I believe Akina could have a better home, and that is what I wish for her. Contact possibility:

Alter : geb. About Akina

What life with Akina looks like

Akina is a small senior mixed breed dog waiting at ASPCA Friesoythe and surroundings in Saterland.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Akina, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Akina?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. ASPCA Friesoythe and surroundings handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Akina on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Akina if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — ASPCA Friesoythe and surroundings will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Akina already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Akina isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with ASPCA Friesoythe and surroundings early rather than rehoming privately; they know Akina and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
