Adopt Al

Mixed Breed Cat · Male · Adult · 5 years

Al came into our care as a very scared stray who was covered in fleas. We have no idea what Al has experienced and he was quite rightly very worried by people and would struggle to engage with us here at The Bristol Animal Rescue Centre but thanks to our very successful foster scheme we were able to place this special cat with a foster carer where he is starting to accept affection on his own terms. Al is in need of a calm patient home where he can continue to come out of his shell. Initially he can be quite nervous and fearful of touch but with the right handling and an understanding of cat body language he quickly comes out of his shell. He loves having zoomies and can be quite clumsy, sometimes knocking things over that are in his way!! He loves his toys, catnip and his treat ball. The most important thing to Al is food – He’s not picky. He loves having head scratches but it has to be on his terms as he can sometimes still be a little fearful of handling. He’s a big softie once resettled in a home and has an even bigger character. Currently he’s in a foster home and is always close to his foster carer, keeping an eye on what they’re up to and wanting to be involved in everything they’re doing. He’s still not keen on the hoover (who isn’t?) and will run and hide at the moment if someone comes to the front door, but is gaining confidence each day! Please note that should you be invited to meet and adopt Al, you will be meeting him in his cat carrier, we will be unable to let him out as he will find that too stressful, his wonderful foster carer is currently doing carrier training with him and we will also provide you with tips on the day too so please do judge this wonderful cat by this profile and the gorgeous photos of him in his foster home. About Al

What life with Al looks like

Al is a large adult mixed breed cat cat waiting at Bristol Animal Rescue Centre in Bristol.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Al, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Al?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Bristol Animal Rescue Centre handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Al on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Al if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Bristol Animal Rescue Centre will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Al already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Al isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Bristol Animal Rescue Centre early rather than rehoming privately; they know Al and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
