Alaska

Mixed Breed · Unknown

Alaska is an imposing white German Shepherd who came to our animal shelter via the authorities. His physical and health condition was unfortunately very poor. He weighed more than 60 kg, had swollen joints, inflamed gums, and broken teeth. His mouth area and jowls were always slobbering. Now he is in veterinary treatment, underwent an operation at one point, and had to lose four split teeth. It is likely that his teeth were damaged in an attempt to free himself, as he had lived in a tethered state. In short, he is a poor little fellow who has not been treated well, let alone in an appropriate manner. Now we are searching for a new home for the large German Shepherd. Alaska, who always wants to be "part of the action," is a loyal companion who, however, needs an active, challenging environment to be happy. He wants to be part of the family and spend a lot of time with his people. His curiosity about all external stimuli is often challenging, as he likes to be independent and also quite self-assured in exploring his environment and loudly declaring it. Patience is not one of his strengths; he requires a lot of stimulation and can become an excellent family dog in the right hands. His new home should ideally be on an even floor and have an enclosed garden. His muscle building, conditioning, and endurance will still take some time, and the happy dog needs loving people by his side. There should always be someone at home, or the option to take him everywhere. Above the left corner, three split molars were removed, and below the left corner, one molar was removed. It was a very complex and lengthy operation. Alaska's wounds were sutured, and he received pain medication and antibiotics.

About Alaska

What life with Alaska looks like

Alaska is a extra-large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Bad Salzuflen in Bad Salzuflen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Alaska, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Alaska?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Bad Salzuflen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Alaska on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Alaska if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Bad Salzuflen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Alaska already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Alaska isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Bad Salzuflen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Alaska and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
