Alexa

American Staffordshire Terrier · Female · Young · 3 years

Here is Alexa, a young American Staff of one year old who was entrusted to us following a complicated living situation. She lived with several dogs but was not accustomed to the daily life most dogs experience: walks on a leash, meeting strangers, or regular outings. She has become fearful and knows little of these things. Today, Alexa is slowly discovering all of this at our shelter through progressive walks and gentle interactions with our team. The leash still remains a source of anxiety for her, especially the tension it can exert on her neck with a collar: when this happens, she often freezes and no longer dares to move forward. Our caretakers carry her for a few meters when the situation becomes too stressful for her. Progress is, however, very real: Alexa accepts the harness more and more, which she finds more reassuring than the collar, and her outings are gradually becoming better. With patience and gentleness, she is learning to gain confidence. Alexa gets along well with other dogs. With humans she doesn’t know, she can be wary at first. But as soon as a bond of trust is established, she reveals a completely different side: a sweet, very gentle, and particularly affectionate dog. We recommend several meet-and-greets with her future adopters to build this trust. The ideal home for Alexa will need a patient family ready to accompany her in her discovery of the outside world and to continue the work started at the shelter. A reassuring environment where she can continue to evolve and reveal all her tenderness.

About Alexa

What life with Alexa looks like

Alexa is a medium-sized young adult american staffordshire terrier dog waiting at SRPA Veeweyde Brussels in Brussels.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Fearful of leash tension and new situations, requires gradual introduction to outside world and patient training

🇧🇪Adopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Alexa, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Alexa?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SRPA Veeweyde Brussels handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Alexa on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Alexa if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SRPA Veeweyde Brussels will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Alexa already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Alexa isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SRPA Veeweyde Brussels early rather than rehoming privately; they know Alexa and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (FR). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
