Adopt Alfred

Male · Young · 3 years

Firstly, it should be noted: The pictures are misleading, Alfred is not a lister dog! He weighs only around 13 kg and is very small. Alfred came to us after a year in the UPDATE February 2025. We had Alfred at the Start-ins-neue-Leben project to assess him due to biting incidents. SinL writes the following about the little guy: ------------------------------------------------------------------ We would like to introduce to you the mixed-breed male dog Alfred, who was assessed by us. He was born on March 30, 2023, and is currently at the animal shelter Herne-Wanne. Alfred is a great type. He weighs only 12 kg but can be very assertive when something is important to him. Initially, he came to the animal shelter after a year. First of all, he is a real sweetheart who wins people over with his charming nature very quickly. He runs through life happily and attentively, throws himself at people, and lies on his back to be stroked. He is outgoing, steps forward at social interactions, tries to be noticed, or does a lot to be seen. However, it is quickly underestimated that he feels a great sense of responsibility and takes charge of situations. If it suits his conditions, everything seems to be in order at first. If something is important to him, however, and someone wants to prevent him from doing something, he can become unpleasant (he would bite without a muzzle)... For example, he takes food and toys for himself when he can. Or: If he is under a table, he does not want to be pulled out. He reacts to movement stimuli (for example, this could be a lure, but also a towel being dragged across the floor), and runs after it immediately. In contact with other dogs, he tries to position himself. If his counterpart does not impress him, Alfred thinks and can take a step back. In the end, it now requires exactly such people, namely those who are calm, kind, and straightforward with him and who do not let themselves be impressed by him. Because Alfred has certainly had enough success with such people. Now it's time to turn the ship around and give him the chance to learn. He will definitely do so if you stick with it and prove your perseverance. Alfred represents so many dogs that end up in the animal shelter at around 1.5 to 2 years old because people are overwhelmed. And he represents so many dogs for whom it could have been different if they had been understood and trained and had received orientation and boundaries.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

About Alfred

What life with Alfred looks like

Alfred is a medium-sized young adult dog waiting at Tierheim Herne-Wanne in Herne.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Alfred, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Alfred?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Herne-Wanne handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Alfred on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Alfred if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Herne-Wanne will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Alfred already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Alfred isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Herne-Wanne early rather than rehoming privately; they know Alfred and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
