Almond

Mixed Breed · Unknown · 2 years

Euthanasia was narrowly avoided for Poor Almond from a Christmas lawn. Almond started life with a big disadvantage. Spent two years in a municipal pound, where due to lack of space the issue of euthanasia was raised several times in his case. He finds both confinement and now also life outside the kennel difficult, as his past was lacking in stimulation, so he needs more time to get used to life outside the kennel. He wants to discover everything at once, he doesn't know where to run or what to sniff first. However, if properly tired, he walks nicely and calmly. Friendly with people, but needs time to truly open up and bond. We are looking for a guardian for Almond who is experienced, patient, and willing to take him to dog school. Someone who gradually helps him adapt to the world, which he hasn't really known so far. Although he had a difficult beginning, that's exactly why we strongly believe that someone will see the potential in him and give Almond the second chance he so much deserves!

About Almond

What life with Almond looks like

Almond is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Rex Kutyaotthon in Budapest.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Requires patient rehabilitation due to shelter trauma and confinement stress

🇭🇺Adopting from Hungary

Hungarian shelters operate at high capacity given the country's stray population. Animals leave sterilized, chipped, and with a passport. Many shelters coordinate transport to Germany, Austria, and the Nordics.

Frequently asked

Adopting Almond, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Almond?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Rex Kutyaotthon handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Almond on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Almond if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Rex Kutyaotthon will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Almond already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Almond isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Rex Kutyaotthon early rather than rehoming privately; they know Almond and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (HU). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
