ALZIRA

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 4 years

A ALZIRA was found on the street in May 2023 with her babies. First, the puppies were taken to the shelter, but she was very scared and no one could catch her. She ended up being captured using a tranquilizer dart and brought to the shelter to reunite with her puppies. When they were adopted, the ALZIRA lived in a large dog shelter with several dogs, with whom she always got along wonderfully and continues to get along, as she is very social with other dogs. The ALZIRA is very shy with people. No one knows what she went through on the street, but it's easy to imagine it wasn't easy. Still, slowly, she is gaining confidence. For two years, no one could touch her, she just avoided contact. But recently, she started to trust... Now she approaches carefully and, when she gets to know someone, she allows the leash to be put on. She surprised us by showing that she even knows how to walk on a leash! The ALZIRA is extremely gentle. Even when she was afraid, she was never aggressive. She loves food, and the treats helped us win her heart. She was able to set aside her fears just for a treat. In a home, surrounded by love and patience, the ALZIRA would blossom. She will be handed over vaccinated, dewormed, spayed, and with a microchip.

PT·Show original

A Alzira é extremamente meiga.

About ALZIRA

What life with ALZIRA looks like

ALZIRA is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at O Cantinho da Milu in Lisbon.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Requires patient, understanding adopter due to severe shyness and fear from street trauma

🇵🇹Adopting from Portugal

Portuguese rescues coordinate extensively with European rescue networks for cross-border placements, especially for galgos and podencos. Sterilization, vaccinations, and microchip ID are standard. Adoption fees typically cover the full vet workup.

Frequently asked

Adopting ALZIRA, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about ALZIRA?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. O Cantinho da Milu handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw ALZIRA on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt ALZIRA if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — O Cantinho da Milu will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is ALZIRA already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if ALZIRA isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with O Cantinho da Milu early rather than rehoming privately; they know ALZIRA and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PT). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
