Adopt Amato

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 3 years

Around 3 years old (born around 28.02.2023), 65 cm, 32 kg, male, neutered, Leishmaniosetest positive. Still in the animal shelter in Spanienne. New video March 26: New video October 25: Update June 25 by team member Amato – Joy on Four Paws. A walk with Amato is anything but boring! The young Schäfer mix male dog is full of energy and drive at two years old; exactly as one would expect at this age. Amato loves to discover the world and starts every adventure with great enthusiasm. Throughout, he shows himself to be eager to learn and cooperative: Putting on the chest harness works with a little patience and is problem-free, and on the leash, he can be led with a secure lead. Amato is attentive and curious. The wild living rabbits have particularly caught his interest. But despite his enthusiasm, he remains approachable and can be reliably distracted and recalled. His encounter with other dogs has also been handled confidently and calmly. During a walk, we met Nube and Pitschi, who are already accustomed to dog contact. Amato showed himself to be very social and balanced. Amato is looking for active people who enjoy exploring the world with him and can give him the security and structure he needs. With the right guidance, he develops into a wonderful companion – curious, friendly, and full of joy. Videos June 25: Amato – A Fighter with a Big Heart and Lots of Energy. Amato is a very active and strong dog who needs a lot of movement and mental stimulation. He has plenty of power, which is why he is currently only walked by the more physically capable volunteers. At first, he is still excited and tense on the walk, but over time, he calms down significantly. He has not yet been tested with other dogs – first, he needs the necessary calm and stability before working on dog interactions. The animal behavior consultant notes that Amato is very cooperative during training. Health: Currently, Amato is in very good health. Upon his arrival, he was unfortunately in a very different state: severely undernourished, just skin and bones, ravenous, and despondent. For the first few days, he almost wanted to eat the hands of the caregivers, so hungry he was. He had to be fed slowly and multiple times a day to get his stomach used to it. He is leishmaniasis-positive, but responded very well to the initial treatment. After gaining weight, a retest was conducted – with much better results. Today, one no longer notices the leishmaniasis. He simply needs his daily tablet, nothing else. Information on leishmaniasis can be found online or here: Looking for a Home: Amato is looking for people who are eager to work with him and show him the world with patience and consistency. Strength and experience are important. Ideally, he would be in a home with a large garden, with people who can offer him long, varied walks. We are looking for a home for him without other animals and without children, as he is still too boisterous. History: Amato's story is heartbreaking. Our partner animal shelter was called by the local Perrera (state animal shelter): It was perhaps a dog from our partner animal shelter that had escaped, one had seen a dog near the animal shelter. At the same time, a dog lover called our organization – he had secured Amato. The man brought him on foot, running beside his bicycle. Amato was in a terrible state – he could barely stand, was emaciated, and completely weakened. It was uncertain whether he would survive. But Amato is a fighter. With all his might, he fought his way back to life. Read the post after Amato's arrival, with 2 videos from the day of the find: Videos of Amato during training:

About Amato

What life with Amato looks like

Amato is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at home4dogs in Home4dogs.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting Amato, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Amato?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. home4dogs handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Amato on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Amato if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — home4dogs will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Amato already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Amato isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with home4dogs early rather than rehoming privately; they know Amato and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
