Andy

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 8 years

When Andy came into the care of our friends at APA La Sonrisa in Malaga, the 8-year-old (as of April 2022) was completely terrified. The neglected male dog came from a small village and was probably severely abused by his previous owner over many years. After a few months, the behavior trainers in Malaga had already made a lot of progress in gaining Andy's trust, but even though the funny terrier has forgiven a lot, it is clear that he has not forgotten everything yet. To make things worse, Andy had a Leishmania flare-up and is currently being treated with Milteforan, an effective anti-Leishmania medication that can also cause unpleasant side effects. After that, Andy will be switched to Allopurinol and hopefully then has long-term relief from his chronic illness. Our adopters would be happy to inform you about what to expect when living with a Leishmania dog; please do not hesitate to contact us. Despite his terrible past, Andy is a cheerful companion who, once he has formed a friendship with people, plays and cuddles devotedly. However, the path is often long until then, and Andy carefully tests whether the other person truly deserves his attention. Our troubled puppy gets along well with female dog, but he likes to show off with other male dogs. We are looking for a very understanding home for Andy that gives him time to settle in and understand that he can open up. The behavior training that started in the animal shelter should also be continued by and with his new owners. Since Andy is very jumpy and panics at sudden movements, we would like a household without children and with calm two-legged beings. A garden would be great for our scared little one, so he is not overwhelmed immediately by all the new impressions on the street and in the new neighborhood. Andy is one of the dogs we fear might grow old in the animal shelter and never find out what it's like to live in a real home, with people who love him just as he is (and as he was made by other people). Andy would really like the chance to show that behind his fear and suffering there is a really amazing, cheerful, and sociable dog hidden.

About Andy

What life with Andy looks like

Andy is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Andy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Andy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Andy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Andy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Andy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Andy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Andy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
