Adopt Anka

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Adult · 6 years

Anka came to us together with her dog friend from very bad circumstances. Both dogs lived their entire lives as guard dogs in a community garden. Ankas dog friend had to be euthanized after seven months with us due to a serious illness. Anka mourned for the first few weeks but has a high resilience and adapted well to the new situation. Unfortunately, Anka is not entirely healthy either; she has a growth on her flank of unknown origin, and we do not know where the health journey will lead. Physically, however, she is not restricted by this. Anka is a wonderful dog. She is modest, calm, balanced, and at peace when her environment is right. She has a very calm temperament and loves to lie high up outside and observe her surroundings. She is still watchful, a true herdsider. She does not want to make contact with strangers and needs some time to get familiar. Unfortunately, Anka does not know how to handle other dogs. She is rather reserved and wants to remain an individual dog. She walks very calmly and quietly on the leash and loves leisurely walks. Anka has gotten to know life in the house with us, she enjoys soft dog beds, lying near the heater, and is very clean. Children, a lot of chaos, and visitors are a horror to her. Actually, we would not want to place Anka at all, as we notice that our pony dog has found some peace here. Due to her demands, size, and the fact that she is not entirely healthy, the chances of placement are certainly very slim. But if it is the right place, we would of course be happy for our pony dog. Ankas ideal home: a house and a large garden, people with herding dog experience, no children, no other animals, much peace, few visitors, and a person who values and understands this wonderful dog. If there are no longer the right people for Anka, we would be grateful for sponsors who secure Ankas life here at the animal shelter financially.

About Anka

What life with Anka looks like

Anka is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Koblenz in Koblenz.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Anka, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Anka?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Koblenz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Anka on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Anka if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Koblenz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Anka already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Anka isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Koblenz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Anka and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
