Ares

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Young · 1 year

Update September 2025: Ares still sadly searches for a new home. He has physically developed well and is now able to run very well, allowing for longer walks (which he loves). Unfortunately, his character has shown more and more of the herding dog traits. We are therefore looking for a single person or experienced individuals who can handle interactions with strangers. Ares was born around 2013 in Romania. Last year, an animal rescuer became aware of him as he was in a shelter with an unattended broken leg. At that time, Ares could barely walk, he was obviously in great pain, and he could not bear his right hind leg. A vet in Romania determined that an operation should bring the desired success so that Ares could walk again. Ares was therefore operated on with the help of donors in a veterinary clinic in Romania and then also received inpatient care. After the operation, one can see on the first videos and images that Ares is standing on all four legs and already taking some steps. Since the operation was more difficult than expected, only the femoral neck and not the femoral head could be removed, as the callus formation was too advanced, given that the injury went untreated for over a year. Another operation was recommended by the Romanian vet. Ares should now ideally go to Germany as soon as possible, but unfortunately, there have been and still are no adopters or foster homes for him. So he ended up with us at the animal shelter, hoping to get a chance to be rehomed. We have since had Ares examined by a vet in Germany, who decided against another operation. Ares now has almost no complaints when walking, plays and frolics joyfully, and one can clearly see his joy in movement. The slight misalignment of the hind leg is well compensated for, and so we will keep him in line with his age. He enjoys several small walks throughout the day. He very much likes to sniff around on our fenced shelter grounds and roll in the grass. We are now searching for a loving family for the senior dog to make his remaining years beautiful and to accept him as he is. The handsome mixed breed is extremely friendly and open. However, he has not yet had much experience and has never lived in a home. At our dog shelter, he behaves impeccably and has no issues with household noises (such as washing machine, dryer, radio, TV, etc.). Ares is certainly a natural talent, he can still learn everything, and he is not a problem dog. Ares is very cuddly and has already been driven in the car without any issues.

About Ares

What life with Ares looks like

Ares is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Bad Salzuflen in Bad Salzuflen.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ares, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ares?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Bad Salzuflen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ares on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ares if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Bad Salzuflen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ares already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ares isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Bad Salzuflen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ares and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
