Ares

Mixed Breed · Unknown

Ares, our young Yellow-breasted Amazon parrot, came to us as a seizure and is now ready for a new home. Ares was hand-raised, which means he has not been socialized with other parrots and may initially have communication problems. Despite this, we are looking for a home where he can live with an Ara female, as that would be the most suitable environment for our young parrot. Currently, Ares cannot fly. He climbs a lot. As a young bird, he is still exploring his surroundings and can sometimes be mischievous. A PBFD test was performed on Ares and came back negative. Caring for parrots is time-consuming and space-intensive. They can live 40-50 years or more. This should also be carefully considered! The size of the aviary should be (LxWxH) 6.00m x 4.00 m x 2.00 m. If there is an outdoor aviary, it must have an insulated shelter that maintains a temperature above 12 degrees Celsius at all times. The shelter for an Ara pair should be approximately 4m x 4m in size. Sufficient climbing opportunities and perches made of various natural woods are also necessary. A bathing area for the large parrots should always be available. Parrots are highly social animals that need to be engaged daily with sufficient activity, mental stimulation, and climbing or flying opportunities to avoid behavioral problems (e.g., feather plucking).

About Ares

What life with Ares looks like

Ares is a large adult mixed breed bird waiting at Tierheim Hamburg in Hamburg.

Birds are long-lived, social, and noisy. The species and individual history matter enormously — ex-companion parrots can carry strong attachments and trauma. Ask the shelter about their daily routine, diet, and whether they'd do best alone or with a flockmate.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ares, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ares?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Hamburg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ares on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ares if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Hamburg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ares already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most birds on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ares isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Hamburg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ares and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
