Adopt Aroo

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

My story: Here is Aroo, a German Shepherd mix who came to us through the pound. He is estimated to be 9 years old. Aroo is a wonderful dog. Despite his large size (almost 35kg), he has charmed every person he has met, even those who were not comfortable with dogs. His secret? He doesn't run, he doesn't jump, he simply approaches slowly and waits politely for someone to scratch his head. We don't know Aroo's past, but he gives the impression that he has never really known home. However, after 15 days in foster care, he finally understood that he too was entitled to the comfort of being indoors. The discovery of his life was undoubtedly the couch, on which he takes his best naps. Aroo is an extremely easy dog to live with on a daily basis: he doesn't steal food, he doesn't destroy anything, he doesn't pull on the leash, and he doesn't jump on people. My character: The years he probably spent outdoors have not, however, allowed him to learn house training. He is capable of making an effort when someone is present, but he hasn't really grasped the concept. Sometimes, Aroo tries to guard and goes into the garden to bark at some birds (then comes back when he realizes that even the birds aren't afraid of him). Aroo gets along very well with other dogs, and currently lives with several cats in foster care, which he really likes. He understands very well if he can or cannot approach, and does not display any resource guarding (to the great dismay of his foster family, who constantly find their cat eating from Aroo's bowl). Likes/Dislikes: But beyond dogs and cats, Aroo deeply loves humans. He is capable of forming a strong bond, and will only have eyes for his future family. Aroo likes walks (not too long, due to his age and health condition), but he loves cuddles on the couch even more. He is microchipped, not neutered, vaccinated, and treated for internal and external parasites. Aroo has arthritis in his back, which limits his movements a bit but doesn't prevent him from jumping on the couch or getting into the car. He has a significant heart condition requiring daily treatment: as a precaution, any non-essential surgery should be avoided (that's why he is not neutered). His teeth are not in very good condition, but he eats his dry kibble without difficulty if they are mixed with pate.

About Aroo

What life with Aroo looks like

Aroo is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at APAA Trégrom in France.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇫🇷Adopting from France

French refuges follow the SPA framework: adopters sign a cession contract that includes sterilization, vaccinations, microchip identification, and rabies passport. Fees are typically €150–€300. Many refuges work with rescue transport partners for cross-border placements.

Frequently asked

Adopting Aroo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Aroo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. APAA Trégrom handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Aroo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Aroo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — APAA Trégrom will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Aroo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Aroo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with APAA Trégrom early rather than rehoming privately; they know Aroo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (FR). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
