Adopt Arwen

Mixed Breed · Female

Description Our animal welfare workers report: the beautiful, state-owned Arwen was found together with Bilbo; they are likely siblings, and the two are very familiar with each other, playfully romping together in the shelter's run. Both dogs were not microchipped, and no one searched for them. It was a depressing, bleak sight for the animal welfare workers, as both Arwen and Bilbo had heavy iron chains around their necks. They probably led monotonous lives as chained dogs and were then "disposed of." Whether Arwen ever knew anything different than life on a chain, we unfortunately do not know. In terms of personality, Arwen is a lovable, intelligent, and self-confident female dog. She takes some time to warm up to strangers. Initially, Arwen is reserved towards unfamiliar people, but not fearful. Once the ice is broken, the impressive fur nose rejoices in human attention and affection and even comes to demand cuddles proactively, as Arwen knows exactly what she wants and what is good for her. While Arwen initially observes humans critically, she is also willing to form a positive bond if one earns her trust. In the shelter's run, Arwen displays her "herding" genes with confident patrolling and enjoys taking on a task. So far, the four-legged friend has only been in the run and kennel with her brother Bilbo; she shows dominance towards other female dogs and does not like small dogs. Compared to Bilbo, Arwen is more rugged in behavior and more self-assured or "adult" in demeanor, regulating the daily routine of the two, and Bilbo partly follows his sister's lead. In the new home, there should be no small dogs, no cats, and no children. A rural home would be ideal. A joint adoption with Bilbo, who orients himself towards Arwen, would be wonderful (but both can also be rehomed separately). There can be an existing, sovereign male dog in the new home, but no female dog. For Arwen herself, a single placement would also be perfectly fine. We wish for experienced dog owners for Arwen. Herding dog enthusiasts will be happy with her, as she gladly follows her genetics. Information about the herding protection dog. Please note:

About Arwen

What life with Arwen looks like

Arwen is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierischgeholfen e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Arwen, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Arwen?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierischgeholfen e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Arwen on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Arwen if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierischgeholfen e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Arwen already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Arwen isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierischgeholfen e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Arwen and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
