ASHANTI

Female · Adult · 8 years

A ASHANTI was found lost on the highway in January 2022. After almost 3 years at the shelter, ASHANTI is now in a temporary foster care family. She has learned to be housebroken and already knows how to sit on command. She is very obedient, learns quickly, and comes when called. She lives with other dogs and gets along well with everyone. We know she does not like cats. ASHANTI has a serious and scary look but is a very gentle dog. She becomes immediately happy with a little attention. She likes everyone and loves parties. She walks well on a leash and behaves very well on the street, whether it is noisy or not. She is not bothered by cars or motorcycles and enjoys walking with other dogs. ASHANTI suffers from arthritis. She limps on both front legs. It is common in older and larger dogs. No surgery can fix it. We can relieve her with daily supplements such as Flexadin and anti-inflammatory medication like Galliprant and a monthly Librela injection. We are committed to providing ASHANTI's medication for the rest of her life. A temporary foster care family is exactly that: temporary. ASHANTI needs a home full of love. It can be with people only or with other dogs as well.

PT·Show original

About ASHANTI

What life with ASHANTI looks like

ASHANTI is a large adult dog waiting at O Cantinho da Milu in Lisbon.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Suffers from arthritis in both front legs, requires daily supplements (Flexadin), anti-inflammatory medication (Galliprant), and monthly injections (Librela). Shelter commits to providing medication for life.

🇵🇹Adopting from Portugal

Portuguese rescues coordinate extensively with European rescue networks for cross-border placements, especially for galgos and podencos. Sterilization, vaccinations, and microchip ID are standard. Adoption fees typically cover the full vet workup.

Frequently asked

Adopting ASHANTI, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about ASHANTI?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. O Cantinho da Milu handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw ASHANTI on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt ASHANTI if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — O Cantinho da Milu will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is ASHANTI already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if ASHANTI isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with O Cantinho da Milu early rather than rehoming privately; they know ASHANTI and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PT). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
