Adopt Ates

Male · Young · 3 years

Ates came as a found animal to the animal shelter. The male dog was already known to us, as there had been several reports to the veterinary office regarding the dog’s husbandry in the past. The previous owner claimed to have sold the dog. Ates is a temperamental and muscular fellow who has not yet set any boundaries in his life. He is extremely physically active and can be rather grumpy towards people and other dogs. Ates jumps at people and he also likes to bite at the sleeves of jackets. Given his size and weight, this already poses a problem. Ates is unfortunately not leash-friendly and he also barks a lot at other dogs, which makes walks challenging. The large male dog was only used for groundskeeping until now, so it’s no wonder he lacks knowledge about the small 1x1 of dog training. His new owners will have their work cut out for them. Ates is not generally incompatible with his fellow animals. He wouldn’t have an issue with a female dog by his side, and with other male dogs, it depends on their compatibility. We are looking for people who already have experience in the husbandry of herding dogs for Ates. Ideally, he would have a large property where he can again perform his duties, as he does with passion. Ates likes to be outdoors and is definitely not a couch potato. Of course, an attachment to a family with a lot of human interaction must be given. It would be ideal if he could live with another dog. Children should not live in Ates's new home. This animal has a history of biting.

About Ates

What life with Ates looks like

Ates is a large young adult dog waiting at Tierheim Braunschweig in Braunschweig.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ates, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ates?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Braunschweig handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ates on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ates if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Braunschweig will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ates already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ates isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Braunschweig early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ates and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
