Balou

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 3 years

Balou is one of those dogs you look at and immediately start making room on the couch for. With his charming frown over the superhero mask, his wise gaze, and his wonderful mix of enthusiasm, curiosity, and cuddle cravings, he brings the full package of a true heart dog. Balou is no longer a puppy, but at 3 years old (as of May 2026), he is always ready for adventures, cozy evenings, reliable routines, and a home where he can settle in and learn. The handsome Shar Pei mix was found alone in the salt flats of Cádiz, abandoned without access to drinking water. There, he wandered despondently, wore his paws to the bone, and kept returning to the same spot—obviously in hope that his owner would eventually come to pick him up. It is all the more surprising for our partners at DogzMansion how much friendliness, openness, and trust this dog has maintained. Balou meets the world with a willing and ever-attentive attitude. He is very interested in making up for everything he apparently never experienced in his previous life. Balou is people-oriented, open-minded, and curious—and sometimes disarmingly candid in a way that makes you smile rather than sigh. Our weathered, sometimes more distant gentleman is active and playful, but can just as easily settle down. He loves shared adventures, already runs well on a leash, travels comfortably in the car, and has shown in the camper that he can be left alone for a short while. All the new challenges presented to him by the animal welfare workers in Spain, he has so far met with great skill. He also shows social and compatible behavior with other dogs (which is not so typical for a Shar Pei mix), but knows when to set polite boundaries. Additionally, Balou is healthy, vaccinated, neutered, and his Mediterranean check was negative—excellent prerequisites for a successful start in a new life. Balou is well-suited for a home with family ties, and is just as happy with children as with a second dog. While a dog with experience is not strictly necessary, what is much more important are a heart, a sense of humor, patience, and a desire to give a dog with a past the security of a real home. Since he currently lives in the animal shelter, much of his new daily routine will still be new to him. A house, fixed routines, and all the little things of cohabitation—these are what he should continue to learn at his own pace. The best prerequisites for this are people who do not expect perfection but love development and are genuinely happy about every small progress. By adopting Balou, you will not get a boring "store-bought" dog, but a real character with a soft core: a companion for laughter, running, learning, and loving. Balou does not seek a perfect home, but one where he is given time to settle in, where the lovable male dogs are trusted, and where you might occasionally smile at how much personality fits into 20 kilos of a dog. If you are ready for loyal gazes, joyful adventures, and a still very young dog who conquers your heart and couch, then Balou could be exactly the right one for you.

DE·Show original

About Balou

What life with Balou looks like

Balou is a small young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Balou, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Balou?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Balou on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Balou if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Balou already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Balou isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Balou and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
