Balto

Border Collie · Male · Adult · 6 years

Balto – an intelligent male Border Collie dog seeks active people Balto originally came from Spain and has now had the chance to get to know life in a household setting in Germany. There, he shows himself as a pleasant and uncomplicated roommate who can become an excellent companion with the right people by his side. The handsome male Border Collie is house-trained, remains problem-free when left alone for up to three hours, and sleeps through the night relaxed. He also masters car rides gracefully – Balto willingly gets in and travels calmly and composedly. Once he has gained trust and is treated respectfully, fairly, and clearly, he closely aligns himself with his people. He seeks their company and enjoys the shared time. At the same time, Balto typically brings a large portion of intelligence and work enthusiasm. He is not a dog content with a few short walks but one who wants to be physically and, above all, mentally engaged. Balto therefore seeks people who take pleasure in working actively with their dog. We can envision him well in areas like fetching work, Rally Obedience, object search, or similar activities. When he is given a task that challenges and fosters him, Balto shows himself as a balanced, content, and relaxed companion. For Balto, we wish for a home with active people who understand the needs of a Border Collie or are willing to learn about them. For those seeking an intelligent partner who would like to go through life with their person and enthusiastically master new tasks, Balto could be the perfect companion. Balto is waiting to find his people – people who appreciate his abilities and give him the chance to fully develop his potential.

About Balto

What life with Balto looks like

Balto is a large adult border collie dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Balto, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Balto?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Balto on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Balto if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Balto already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Balto isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Balto and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
