Balto

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 5 years

Balto is a 5.5-year-old male Alaska Husky. He is chipped but not neutered. He has a food allergy, but no further tests have been done beyond changing his food. He has had all annual check-ups and vaccinations and is in good health. He is a healthy and fine dog, and his current owner will take him to the dentist over the summer. He sheds mostly when he changes his coat twice a year, otherwise little shedding. He loves going for walks, smells a lot, and is extremely strong, making it difficult to walk with him. He becomes very searching for other dogs, so he must stand still for a long time after the dogs have passed for him to calm down. This can be trained, either at home or by taking him to everyday courses. He has a high energy level and requires a very active daily routine. He should go to a family that likes to be outdoors every day and can take him with them. Balto is the world's kindest and most patient dog. He loves cuddles and long walks and would rather lie on the floor in the bedroom at night. He has never been destructive and loves to be close to his family, as he feels safest. He is afraid of strong wind and weather. He is used to driving in the car and has a crate in the car. He is used to children. He has lived with children all the time with his current owner and has experienced a new family member coming into the family. He loves it and has been very calm and protective over both children. They can play, climb, explore, and Balto lies completely calm. He is used to other dogs as he often has been on visits to others with dogs. Very playful but calms down after a while. He has never been around cats and may seem to have a hunting instinct for them. Balto is used to being alone for a working day, but he should preferably lie in a crate. If not, he gets very stressed because he loses "control" over where the family is, then just goes back and forth, howls and seems very stressed. He lies completely calm in the crate alone at home. Balto has had a turbulent start in life, which new owners must take into account. Those interested can get more information. He is not aggressive, but is very afraid of being abandoned. He does not have a pedigree and is most likely a "child of siblings" as the previous owner did not have control over mating, so he should not be mated as it can produce unhealthy offspring, unethical breeding. Balto needs to come to someone who is his family. Someone who can train him to walk nicely on a leash, but who will also let him pull or run a lot on walks. He would love to be out in nature with his family and the more there are in the family, the better. And most importantly, he needs all the love and attention and give him what he loves most in the world. If you are interested in Balto or have any further questions, you can contact the dog group at the Tromsø Animal Protection.

Ligger helt rolig i buret alene hjemme. About Balto

What life with Balto looks like

Balto is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Dyrebeskyttelsen Norge Tromsø in Tromsø.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇴Adopting from Norway

Norwegian rescues require thorough background checks. Animals leave with a Nordic pet passport and full vetting. Norway is outside the EU so import rules differ slightly — TRACES applies.

Frequently asked

Adopting Balto, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Balto?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dyrebeskyttelsen Norge Tromsø handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Balto on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Balto if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dyrebeskyttelsen Norge Tromsø will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Balto already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Balto isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dyrebeskyttelsen Norge Tromsø early rather than rehoming privately; they know Balto and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NO). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
