Adopt Bärchen

European Shorthair · Male · Adult · 9 years

Too old for the street – searching for a home We have named him Bärchen. This tomcat came to the animal shelter in poor condition and had to undergo a lengthy medical treatment. Unfortunately, all of his teeth had to be removed as they were in very poor condition and caused him pain. Therefore, he now requires soft food. Bärchen is already an older tomcat, and his back problems no longer allow him to move as quickly and nimbly as in his younger years. He is very fond of approaching people, allowing himself to be stroked, and sometimes even plays like a little tomcat. At the same time, he has his own character: If he needs peace and time for himself, one should respect that and give him this retreat. Bärchen doesn't require much – a warm dog bed, soft food, the possibility to go outside when he wants to, and most importantly, a person for whom this little "bear" can be a real treasure. Our senior enjoys the contact with people very much and "tells" his own cat story about his everyday life :)) Even though Bärchen loves fresh air, he prefers to sleep in his warm bed indoors on cold days. We would be very happy if someone were interested in this charming gentleman. The tomcat is currently in a foster home. If you would like to give Bärchen a loving home, we look forward to your contact:

About Bärchen

What life with Bärchen looks like

Bärchen is a small adult european shorthair cat waiting at Tierschutzzentrum Ribbesbüttel in Germany.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Bärchen, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Bärchen?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzzentrum Ribbesbüttel handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Bärchen on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Bärchen if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzzentrum Ribbesbüttel will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Bärchen already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Bärchen isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzzentrum Ribbesbüttel early rather than rehoming privately; they know Bärchen and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
