Bastian

Mixed Breed · Female · Young · 3 years

Bastian is a sunbeam in Podenco form. That the little (and Bastian is really a miniaturized version of his breed) running wonder ends up in the care of our friends at Refugio El Azar is due to his charming and open nature. The animal welfare workers had actually received information about a female dog who was wandering the streets of the city and making a very bad impression. So, various volunteers went in search of the possibly sick or injured Podenca – but unfortunately, they came up empty-handed. In the meantime, a search team encountered the playful Bastian in the evening, who immediately began playing with the dogs of the rescuers. When Bastian caught the attention of other searchers the next day with his friendly and fearless nature, it was decided on the spot that the cheerful world traveler should be moved to the animal shelter – because friendly dogs like Bastian are not only easy prey for dog catchers, they also run a much greater risk of being poisoned, run over, or shot by residents. So, in mid-September 2023, Bastian moved to the small animal shelter El Azar. Although he is now in safety, the little Podenco is completely overwhelmed by the world of bars, the loud noises, the lonely nights, and the fact that he cannot follow his friends all day. Since all foster spots are currently filled with puppies and recovering dogs, there is currently no alternative for the so tender and clingy Bastian, and so the animal welfare workers hope that a home for the wonderful, one-and-a-half-year-old (as of October 2023) charmer will be found in a hurry. Bastian is playful, he loves to snuggle, and his highlight in the dreary shelter routine are the walks where he walks obediently on the leash – in short, despite his breed, he is a beginner dog waiting to enrich a family. And to be honest, besides all these wonderful qualities, Bastian also looks absolutely stunning – can you really resist?

DE·Show original

About Bastian

What life with Bastian looks like

Bastian is a small young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Bastian, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Bastian?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Bastian on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Bastian if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Bastian already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Bastian isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Bastian and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
