Bastos

Staffordshire Bull Terrier · Male · Adult · 6 years

Bastos is a larger dog with a lot of energy and a zest for life. He is friendly and open with people and usually accepts new people quickly, provided they do not pressure him. He builds a very close bond with his trusted people and is reluctant to be separated from them, something he can express loudly. On the leash, Bastos now walks very well, provided the handler can guide him securely and there are few external distractions. However, encounters with other male dogs cause him stress and lead to leash tugs. His people need a lot of strength and stability in these situations because Bastos is a real powerhouse. With calmness and training, these situations can also be brought under control. He also shows a clear prey drive, even cats trigger this in him, so he cannot be placed in a household with cats or small animals. Bastos has already made great progress in behavior with us in just a few weeks and shows himself to be absolutely trainable. With the right people by his side, we believe he will develop into a fantastic companion. However, it is important that his people act consistently, establish clear rules, and take responsibility. New people should be aware that Bastos still needs training and therefore must have the time and willingness for training. Dog experience is required, and under certain circumstances, he can also be trained by experienced handlers or through dog training classes. Due to his size and boisterous nature, we do not see Bastos as suitable for children. We assume that Bastos is house-trained, holding it until the walk. Interested parties in Bastos please send an email: include a few details about yourself and how Bastos would live with you.

About Bastos

What life with Bastos looks like

Bastos is a large adult staffordshire bull terrier dog waiting at Bertha-Bruch-Tierheim Saarbrücken in Saarbrücken.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Bastos, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Bastos?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Bertha-Bruch-Tierheim Saarbrücken handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Bastos on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Bastos if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Bertha-Bruch-Tierheim Saarbrücken will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Bastos already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Bastos isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Bertha-Bruch-Tierheim Saarbrücken early rather than rehoming privately; they know Bastos and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
