Beethoven

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

Beethoven will soon celebrate his eleventh birthday (as of 02/2023). The Labrador uncle had a family all his life, and yet he never experienced what it is like to sleep in the house, snuggle on the couch, survive scary stormy nights with his best friends, or beg at the table. Beethoven spent most of his life with his buddy Odin, a five-year-old German Shepherd, on a property that belonged to his owners. Now his owners have sold the property and are moving into an apartment in the city - Beethoven and Odin remain behind. Right now, the extremely friendly and people-oriented golden retriever is still living with Odin in a foster family, but he will probably have to move to the animal shelter soon. Too many dogs need help that cannot be guaranteed in the daily life of a shelter, and although Beethoven is old and definitely not suited for a life between bars and concrete floors, our friends in Linares unfortunately have no choice if our senior does not soon find people who would like to give him a wonderful retirement. Beethoven is a kind and easygoing older male dog who still enjoys relaxing walks and cozy evenings in front of the TV. Since Beethoven was always outside, it would be nice if he had a garden in his new home - but a purely outdoor keeping is obviously not an option, he should only have access to grass and blue sky when he feels like it. Beethoven tested positive for leishmaniasis, but it is very likely that he has had a positive titer all his life. To make sure the tormentors in Beethoven's blood continue to rest, he is currently being treated with Allopurinol in Spain. This is an inexpensive and effective medication that requires a change to a low-purine diet, but this can be done with little effort. There are now good dry foods specifically developed for dogs with LM-positive status (and they are not much more expensive than other premium foods). If you are one of these special people who open your door to the scruffy four-legged ones, if you have a cozy cuddle basket free for Beethoven and look forward to taking many more beautiful, and equally cozy, walks through the neighborhood with our gentle Opi. If you have a talent for cookies and belly rubs, then please do not hesitate and contact us. It would almost be too good to be true if we could spare Beethoven the experience of the animal shelter.

About Beethoven

What life with Beethoven looks like

Beethoven is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Beethoven, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Beethoven?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Beethoven on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Beethoven if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Beethoven already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Beethoven isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Beethoven and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
