Adopt Ben

Collie · Male · Young · 1 year

About BenBen is a lovely lad who came to the centre via an inspector after he was found living in squalid conditions along with many other dogs. Due to his past being very restricted, it has left him unsure when to adapting to new situations and surroundings. He is a very sweet natured boy who is learning that there is a whole world out there for him to explore, he is beginning to understand that life can be fun and exciting but it all has to be done at his own pace. Ben will need adopters who will commit to his continued training, he is unsure around traffic and will need his family to help him and continue with the work we have been doing with him since arriving at the centre. Ben is a lovely boy who is beginning his new life away from the confinement of his previous home, he will need an experienced owner and is not suitable for first time dog owners. Ben is a very friendly and affectionate dog who loves being with his people, he will make a fantastic addition to the family lucky enough to adopt him. Ben's adopters will need to meet with the centre's behaviourist before adoption to help with his transition in to a new home. Ben is suitable to live with a female dog after a successful introduction at the centre and children aged 14 years and over.

About Ben

What life with Ben looks like

Ben is a young adult collie dog waiting at RSPCA York Animal Home in York.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ben, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ben?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. RSPCA York Animal Home handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ben on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ben if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — RSPCA York Animal Home will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ben already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ben isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with RSPCA York Animal Home early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ben and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (the shelter's own language). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
