Benji

Shar Pei · Male · Young · 1 year

Benji has had a rough time the last couple of weeks, with the rehoming centre being his third home in as many weeks. He was passed between two homes but had a fight with a dog in the second one, resulting in him being brought into our care. Benji is a sweet boy who is doing his best to handle all these changes and he has made really good progress. From barking at us and every dog he saw, he now wags his tail for his handlers and is walking with some calm female dogs. He does seem under socialised and unsure what to do around others so we're pleased with how he's doing. Benji does cry when by himself and would probably love a family where there is someone at home all the time. He has shown himself to be very affectionate with his handlers and we're confident that he will bond quickly with his new family, as long as they give him a little time and space to settle. Benji hasn't shown much interest in toys just yet but he definitely loves his food! Benji can live with older teens but no other pets. We know very little of his background but we believe he has lived in a home and is likely to be house trained.

About Benji

What life with Benji looks like

Benji is a young adult shar pei dog waiting at Dogs Trust Merseyside in Liverpool.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Benji, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Benji?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Merseyside handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Benji on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Benji if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust Merseyside will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Benji already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Benji isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Merseyside early rather than rehoming privately; they know Benji and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
