Adopt Berek

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 5 years

Berek, a dog born in 2021, Berek is a lightly frightened dog after his experiences. When he arrived with us, he was very disoriented and avoided all contact. He only hid in his kennel hoping to be left alone. He was also severely emaciated, and it was clear that he had not had much good in his life. Although he did not show aggression, he more often fled. We had to give him some time to settle in and gradually get used to his new place. Over time, we managed to take him out on a leash for a walk, and it was clear that he needs some space and the company of other dogs. He did not try to dominate anyone and took care of his own affairs. However, we noticed that on the walk, he remains vigilant and constantly on the lookout for threats, practically always in motion. It is possible that he was chased by people, and now he is exceptionally cautious. It did manage to stop him for a moment, pet him, and take a few photos. Berek is making progress quite quickly, and it’s just a matter of time before he fully opens up. Even though he does well on a leash, he just needs a bit more training. Ideally, he would find a quiet home where, with constant human company, he would quickly lose all his fear. Ideally, he would be taken under the care of an experienced handler of dogs after traumatic experiences, or someone who would have a lot of time and patience for him. Someone who would surround him with caring attention and show him that a person can be truly good. We very much hope for a home for this little one. Berek is microchipped, vaccinated, and neutered.

Berek, pies urodzony w 2021r.

About Berek

What life with Berek looks like

Berek is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Schronisko Janik (Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski) in Poland.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Berek, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Berek?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Janik (Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Berek on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Berek if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Janik (Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Berek already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Berek isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Janik (Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Berek and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
