Adopt Berit

Mixed Breed · Female · Young · 1 year

Berit is a cozy and happy dog who often reminds of a cat. She is both intelligent and independent, but also very loving towards those she is close to. She needs things her way and is very good at communicating. For example, you must always fold her blanket twice so it's easier to pull over her head (of course with a treat in the hole, otherwise she will say no thanks), and the expression "there's no bad weather, just bad clothes" fits perfectly with Berit, because if she needs to go out when it's raining and windy, she will only do it if you remembered to put her clothes on (otherwise you have to go back inside, dress her in her jacket and try again!) The foster home would describe her as an old soul, but there is still a youthful glint in her eyes. This girl knows how to relax properly, and often snores loudly but nicely. Despite her independence and strong personality, she is extremely loving and enjoys lying next to you in bed and loves to be scratched, and both shows and tells you when it's time. She appreciates being with her human regardless of where they are, and has no major difficulties with noises or new environments, but prefers a quiet life on a daily basis. The absolutely best things in life for her are: being with her human (currently the girl she lives with in foster care), food in all its forms (a definite favorite is ears with fur on), sleeping and chasing cats, rabbits and anything that moves quickly of course! She is of a working dog type that builds strong bonds with the people she loves, and according to her, it is only these people who are important and make any difference in her life. Sometimes she can be cautious around strangers (especially men) and has probably had fairly bad experiences with them. Showering is not something Berit agrees to, but if she has to be cleaned against her will, then a soaked towel at her level will have to do. Other forms of handling are no problems as long as she is with "her" human, the one she feels safe with. Berit usually gets along well on a leash, can be alone at home for a couple of hours when she feels safe in her home and has some dog friends she gladly and without problem goes on walks with.

About Berit

What life with Berit looks like

Berit is a medium-sized young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Hundstallet in Stockholm.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Needs higher fenced yard due to jumping ability, prefers quiet rural environment

🇸🇪Adopting from Sweden

Swedish shelters require an adoption application and home visit. Animals are chipped, vaccinated, and sterilized. Cross-border placements within the EU use the standard pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Berit, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Berit?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hundstallet handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Berit on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Berit if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hundstallet will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Berit already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Berit isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hundstallet early rather than rehoming privately; they know Berit and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (SV). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
