adoption requirements adoption process Now request this animal! Bernhard passed away after a short but serious illness…Rest in peace, Elfenöhrchen! His story: Sweet Elfenöhrchen has finally found his dog bed after more than 5 years. For over 1600 days, he has only waited to finally arrive. Every one of our Romanian and German colleagues knows Bernhard and his sad eyes. We saw him on every visit, and his muzzle has turned gray with each passing year. It broke our hearts to see him like that, and now we wish him a few more beautiful years in a warm dog bed. Bernhard, the majestic gentleman, is finally getting his chance at a loving home! At around 7 years old, Bernhard may not be the youngest, but that's exactly what makes him special. Perfect for people looking for a loyal companion who goes through life more calmly. He is friendly, curious, and open, though age has made him a bit stiff. We can't rule out that this is a result of years of being housed in a cold yard. He only needs small, quiet walks or a run in a large yard or garden. With his impressive shoulder height of about 60–65 cm, Bernhard is one of the larger dogs. Unfortunately, he also carries a bit of extra weight, but with the right diet, he can certainly get that under control. After five long years in the shelter, Bernhard currently lives on a foster home in Romania, where he has already made some progress. He is now much more approachable, even with men. He takes treats carefully from the hand and lets himself be stroked without the fear he showed earlier. Bernhard gets along well with female dogs, but in the shelter, he did not get along so well with male dogs. Since we don't know if he has ever lived in a home, Bernhard still needs to learn doggy 1×1. With his curious and eager nature, he will surely master this task—provided he gets the time and patience he needs. A quiet home with people who respect and do not pressure him would be perfect for him. Bernhard travels neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, and treated for fleas to his new home. He possesses an EU pet passport and will be transferred after a positive review. Even a foster home would be a great way to ease Bernhard into a new life. Are you ready to show Bernhard the way to a new, better life? Many thanks, Rosenquark! You gave Bernhard his name! Many thanks, Tania K. S.! You support Bernhard with a monthly sponsorship! Vielen Dank Rosenquark! Du hast Bernhard seinen Namen geschenkt! VielenDank Tania K. S.! Du unterstützt Bernhard mit einer monatlichen Patenschaft! Stand: 02.01.2025

About Bernhard

What life with Bernhard looks like

Bernhard is a extra-large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. in München.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Bernhard, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Bernhard?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Bernhard on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Bernhard if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Bernhard already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Bernhard isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Bernhard and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
