Berni

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 4 years

The little man had the luck to leave the animal shelter after his front leg was amputated, because a loving animal friend had a big heart for the poor soul and gave him a home. Quickly, the clingy male dog settled in with her and the other dogs. But over time, it became clear that the poor little old puppy had more and more trouble navigating the stairs to the apartment. We know very well what it means for a dog when a front leg must be amputated in old age; it takes a great effort to move the entire front body. And at an age where strength is waning. When we were asked for help, it was self-evident to us that we would help the animal friend and thus also the poor little puppy. And so, the little Berni moved in with us. Berni is a sweet little dog who always wants to please. He gets along with all the other dogs, and our cats on the farm ignore him. He is also very affectionate with children and is happy when they engage with him. Long walks are not possible with him, for he can be let off the leash right away because he is very attached to his people and always waits for affection. Unfortunately, there is also a small problem. Berni is not entirely house-trained. Several attempts with puppy pads have already been made, but they were unsuccessful. The little man curls up so tightly while sleeping that the pad does not stay in place where it should. And if you then do not hear his whining that he has to go, the misfortune happens in the apartment. We have already had the little one checked by a vet, and it turned out that Berni needs heart medication and medication to stabilize the thyroid. But otherwise, he is sprightly.

About Berni

What life with Berni looks like

Berni is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Kleiner Gnadenhof e.V. in Schwaan / OT Letschow.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Berni, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Berni?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Kleiner Gnadenhof e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Berni on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Berni if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Kleiner Gnadenhof e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Berni already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Berni isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Kleiner Gnadenhof e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Berni and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
