Bernie

Mixed Breed · Male · Puppy · 4 months

♂, born ca. 10/11/2025 puppy type - friendly - social Bernie is a male mixed-breed dog born around 10 or 11/2025 who is likely to grow large. Bernie is a young puppy who, despite his difficult start, is curious and open to the world. He was found in the depths of winter at minus 15 degrees on a city cemetery in Bulgaria – a find that shows how desperately he needed protection. Today, Bernie is in safety and ready to finally settle in. Bernie still knows little and must learn step by step how a household day-to-day works, how to settle down, how to orient himself to people, and how to handle new situations with ease. A home that gives him time, establishes clear routines, and guides him kindly but consistently will help him. In dealing with other animals, Bernie is social: he is compatible with dogs and cats and can therefore, if it all fits, also integrate into already existing four-legged friends. What is important is that his new people enjoy accompanying a puppy who still needs training, security, and lots of affection. For Bernie, we wish for a loving home that is aware that a puppy is not "finished" but means development – with small steps, setbacks, and a great deal of mutual bonding. Whoever gives Bernie this chance gets a loyal companion who gains more and more trust with each passing day. Bernie is vaccinated and microchipped and will be rehomed. He is still too young for the Snap 4-D test and castration. He is located at the gates of Sofia, Bulgaria. The adoption fee for Bernie is 480 Euro. Do you have a suitable home for Bernie? About Bernie

What life with Bernie looks like

Bernie is a puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Ein Freund fürs Leben e.V. in Berlin.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Bernie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Bernie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Ein Freund fürs Leben e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Bernie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Bernie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Ein Freund fürs Leben e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Bernie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Bernie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Ein Freund fürs Leben e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Bernie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
