Betty

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Adult · 4 years

One day, the mixed-breed female dog Betty began to randomly frequent the area near the school where the animal rescuer Kapka works as a teacher. Some children and other school staff members immediately took her to their hearts and cared for Betty on the street for an entire year. Shortly after, Kapka noticed that the female dog regularly ran into cars or other objects. A later examination confirmed that Betty is indeed completely blind. However, even with this limitation, she took long walks through the city every day and played joyfully with other dogs. When Betty began to growl at people who fed her, the rescuers from Priceless Friends took her into their care. The risk was too great that she would be seen as a danger and consequently eliminated. Since then, the rescuers Kapka and Ruska have lovingly cared for the black-and-white female dog. During their joint walks, Betty has already learned to walk on a leash. And through regular visits from children aged 4 to 9, she continues to gain positive experiences with small people as well. Generally, due to her blindness, Betty needs more time to build trust with people. She must first understand that there is no danger for her and that people mean her well. Once she has built trust, she sheds her reserve, allows herself to be touched, and even enjoys being stroked. A dog contract should only be made with reserved and well-socialized dogs. For Betty, we are looking for a rural home with a loving family that can bring enough patience, empathy, and time for a blind female dog who is still unfamiliar with life in the house. About Betty

What life with Betty looks like

Betty is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Look-Tierschutzverein Deutschland e.V. in Hamburg.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Betty, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Betty?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Look-Tierschutzverein Deutschland e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Betty on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Betty if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Look-Tierschutzverein Deutschland e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Betty already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Betty isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Look-Tierschutzverein Deutschland e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Betty and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
