Bilbao

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 1 year

March update: Bilbao is currently living with a foster family and is showing a very loving and warm character. He is a playful, cheerful young dog with lots of energy. The handsome fellow is quite lively and always ready to play. With other dogs, he is very submissive and social; he constantly seeks contact and wants to interact with them. He has no issues with cats. Toward people, Bilbao is very friendly and likeable, but still a bit shy. He seeks closeness and affection, yet at the same time, he still lacks some trust. With patience and love, he will surely warm up quickly. As typical for a dog his age, he enjoys chewing and nibbling on everything, which is why he naturally needs ongoing training, mental stimulation, and sufficient exercise. Overall, Bilbao is a very friendly, social, and joyful dog who will certainly become a wonderful companion with the right family. Background: The handsome boy Bilbao is a small Podenco who was rescued by the animal protectors of Pro Animal La Gomera from an animal shelter with very limited resources—a place where he unfortunately did not receive the necessary care. His hind legs are likely weakened due to the long period without adequate movement. When he came into the care of the Pro Animal association, it quickly became clear that he primarily needed one thing: care, exercise, and loving affection to help him recover. Now, the shelter is doing everything possible to support him in regaining his strength and to give him the chance for a better life. Despite his past, Bilbao has retained his wonderful nature: he is a very dear, joyful, and playful dog who enjoys interacting with people and other dogs. His will to live is impressive. With the right care and plenty of love, he will surely recover quickly and well. Now, he only needs a family to accompany him on his journey and finally give him the home he deserves.

About Bilbao

What life with Bilbao looks like

Bilbao is a small young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Garafia e.V. in Germany.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Bilbao, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Bilbao?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Garafia e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Bilbao on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Bilbao if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Garafia e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Bilbao already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Bilbao isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Garafia e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Bilbao and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
