Adopt BLACK

Labrador Retriever · Male · Senior · 9 years

BLACK was found on the street in June 2021. Since then, his home has been the Cantinho. No one has ever shown any interest in him. Meanwhile, BLACK tested positive for leishmaniasis and takes a daily dose of alopurinol. In January 2024, he developed a severe infection in his left eye, which had to be removed. He now lives with only his right eye but leads a normal life. We don't lose hope that a very special person will accept him into their home. BLACK is a very gentle and sociable dog with all the other dogs. He behaves well on leash walks. BLACK will be delivered vaccinated, dewormed, neutered, and microchipped.

About BLACK

What life with BLACK looks like

BLACK is a large senior labrador retriever dog waiting at O Cantinho da Milu in Lisbon.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

Note from the shelter: Leishmaniasis requiring daily alopurinol medication, left eye removed due to severe infection in January 2024

🇵🇹Adopting from Portugal

Portuguese rescues coordinate extensively with European rescue networks for cross-border placements, especially for galgos and podencos. Sterilization, vaccinations, and microchip ID are standard. Adoption fees typically cover the full vet workup.

Frequently asked

Adopting BLACK, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about BLACK?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. O Cantinho da Milu handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw BLACK on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt BLACK if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — O Cantinho da Milu will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is BLACK already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if BLACK isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with O Cantinho da Milu early rather than rehoming privately; they know BLACK and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PT). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
