Blacky

Male · Young · 1 year

This handsome black German Shepherd of almost two years is a loving, affectionate, and playful dog who enjoys spending time with his people. He already knows several basic commands and loves to enjoy attention and cuddles. He often seeks support from his handler and builds a strong bond with the people he trusts. With his enthusiastic personality and eager-to-learn attitude, he has all the cards in hand to grow into a fantastic family dog. Because he doesn't seem to know the world very well yet, he can sometimes be a bit unsure and may act like a real scaredy-cat in new situations. He still needs to learn to walk nicely on a leash and also needs further training to stay home alone. For him, we are looking for an experienced owner who works consistently, is willing to invest sufficient time in his upbringing, and can both physically and mentally challenge a young German Shepherd. Someone who stands firm and can guide and further train him will have a great companion.

NL·Show original

About Blacky

What life with Blacky looks like

Blacky is a young adult dog waiting at Dierenasiel Gent in Gent.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇧🇪Adopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Blacky, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Blacky?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenasiel Gent handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Blacky on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Blacky if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenasiel Gent will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Blacky already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Blacky isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenasiel Gent early rather than rehoming privately; they know Blacky and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
