Blue

Rhodesian Ridgeback · Male · Young · 1 year

He has not yet been able to grow up in a stable environment. He has therefore not yet met humans as a reliable social partner and needs a longer familiarization phase with strangers. Once he has gained trust in his reference persons, he shows himself to be accommodating and friendly. If strangers encroach on his personal space, Blue reacts with barking, growling and pulling on the leash. He therefore needs clear leadership from confident people on whom he can orient himself. Blue is a large, temperamental male who knows how to use his strength. His adopters must therefore be physically fit. Senseful for Blue are many rest exercises and orientation training, so dog experience of his adopters is recommended. If Blue wants something very badly, he shows himself to be quite persistent and with a lot of perseverance. If he does not want something right now, he uses humility strategies with reference persons. Blue is generally compatible with other dogs, partly also with males. However, there are also encounters with a lot of conflict potential depending on sympathy, where it can even blow up in doubt. With us, he gets along with other males, partly. Blue is an active dog who likes to move and flit around a lot in the run. He is young and full of energy, so he still needs a lot of mental and physical exercise. Basic commands are not currently available, and leash training is still to be developed. Blue's compatibility with cats or small animals is not known to us. If you are interested in one of our dogs, please contact us by e-mail. Describe to us in the mail how the dog will live with you and send us a phone number. A caregiver will then contact you. Animal descriptions are based on observations in the animal shelter or on information from third parties and do not represent guaranteed properties.

About Blue

What life with Blue looks like

Blue is a large young adult rhodesian ridgeback dog waiting at Tierheim Leipzig in Leipzig.

A young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Blue, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Blue?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Leipzig handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Blue on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Blue if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Leipzig will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Blue already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Blue isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Leipzig early rather than rehoming privately; they know Blue and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
