It is a feline immunodeficiency virus, commonly called feline AIDS, because it resembles the human form of this disease. Infection occurs mainly through direct contact of the carrier's saliva with another cat's blood, for example, through deep bite wounds during fights. Cats with FIV can live with other FIV-infected cats, but also with healthy cats, provided the animals are calm and do not fight aggressively. Only cats can get infected. Therefore, you and your dog cannot get infected, nor can you pass FIV to your neighbor's cat. This is an incurable disease, but with proper care its progression can be prevented, and a cat with FIV can live a long and happy life.
