Bongo – Two years of waiting is two years too many 🐾 .fusion-body .fusion-builder-column-81 > .fusion-body .fusion-flex-container .fusion-imageframe.imageframe-10 img{aspect-ratio:9 / 16;object-position:35% 45%;} .fusion-body .fusion-builder-column-82 > Location: Animal shelter in Slavonski Brod, Croatia Breed: Vizsla mix Date of birth: approx. 01.02.2016 Shoulder height: approx. 60 cm / approx. 27 kg Children should be older Not compatible with cats Single or second dog Ideal environment: Suburban, rural Suitable for: Ambitious first-time dog owners .fusion-body .fusion-button Go directly to the self-disclosure form .fusion-body .fusion-builder-column-83 > .fusion-body .fusion-flex-container .fusion-gallery-10 .fusion-body .fusion-builder-column-84 > .fusion-body .fusion-flex-container Every morning, Bongo wakes up and hopes. Every evening, he falls asleep without his wish ever coming true. For two years, this wonderful male dog has been waiting at the animal shelter for people who will finally see him—not just his handsome face or his warm, honey-colored coat, but him—the dog behind it all. Because Bongo is one of those dogs you don’t fully get to know in the first five minutes. He doesn’t wear his heart on his sleeve. The first time you meet him, you’ll encounter a cautious dog who observes carefully and first wonders whether he can trust a human. And honestly: After everything he’s been through, he’s allowed to be that way. But if you give Bongo some time, you’ll experience something truly special. His skepticism transforms into affection. Cautious glances turn into expectant eyes. Distance gives way to closeness. And suddenly, there’s a dog who wants to cuddle, who bonds deeply with his people—and who couldn’t wish for anything more than finally feeling like he belongs again. Bongo has a gentle nature, loves harmony, and prefers to avoid conflict. He generally gets along well with other dogs—as long as they respect him and don’t constantly bother him. Cats, on the other hand, aren’t among his friends. For small children, the lively family life might be a bit much. Bongo enjoys the quieter things in life and would feel especially comfortable around relaxed people. If you think seniors only sleep all day, you don’t know Bongo. Behind the charming gentleman still lies a little athlete—surprisingly fit and even able to jump over fences when he feels like it. You quickly realize: Age is just a number for him. What touches us most about Bongo is the fact that, despite everything, he hasn’t given up—despite disappointment, despite the long time spent in the shelter, despite the people who’ve forgotten him. He’s still waiting—friendly, hopeful, ready to give his heart once more. Maybe right now, the person Bongo has been waiting for so long is reading these very words. And maybe his story will finally end not behind shelter bars, but on a sofa, with a hand resting gently on his head and the feeling: “Now I’m home.” ❤️ .fusion-body .fusion-button Interested in adopting? About Bongo

What life with Bongo looks like

Bongo is a small senior mixed breed dog waiting at Nordic Strays e.V. in Germany.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Bongo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Bongo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Nordic Strays e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Bongo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Bongo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Nordic Strays e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Bongo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Bongo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Nordic Strays e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Bongo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
