BONNIE

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 8 years

A BONNIE was surrendered to the shelter in February 2022. She had spent most of her life on the streets and was severely malnourished. She arrived very thin, nothing but skin and bones. When she first arrived, she was terrified and had a great deal of fear of people, likely due to her previous life. Over time, the BONNIE began to lose her fear. At first, no one could touch her. If anyone approached, she would run as far as she could or hide for hours in a hole under the doghouse. Now, two years later, the BONNIE has learned to trust some people and will approach those she knows. She is still shy around strangers, but she is very sweet and has never shown a hint of aggression, no matter how scared she might be. She gets along well with other dogs and behaves well on leash walks. She will be delivered vaccinated, dewormed, spayed, and microchipped.

PT·Show original

No início, ninguém lhe conseguia tocar.

About BONNIE

What life with BONNIE looks like

BONNIE is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at O Cantinho da Milu in Lisbon.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Requires patient owner due to past trauma and shyness with strangers

🇵🇹Adopting from Portugal

Portuguese rescues coordinate extensively with European rescue networks for cross-border placements, especially for galgos and podencos. Sterilization, vaccinations, and microchip ID are standard. Adoption fees typically cover the full vet workup.

Frequently asked

Adopting BONNIE, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about BONNIE?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. O Cantinho da Milu handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw BONNIE on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt BONNIE if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — O Cantinho da Milu will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is BONNIE already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if BONNIE isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with O Cantinho da Milu early rather than rehoming privately; they know BONNIE and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PT). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
