This big fellow is Basco, a sweet 8.5-year-old German Shepherd (born on January 1, 2018). Basco came to us after his owner passed away. Basco is an enormous cuddlebug, but he’ll need some time to get to know you first. Throughout his life, he’s had few people around him and was especially attached to his owner. Moreover, he spent most of his time outdoors in the garden, which means many things indoors are still unfamiliar to him. That’s why we’re looking for a home with a garden for Basco—ideally one where he can also spend time outside if he doesn’t feel comfortable inside. Since joining us, Basco has been learning step by step that other people can be nice too. Introducing new people usually goes quite smoothly, but a future owner should keep in mind that visitors shouldn’t approach him too quickly or try to pet him right away. Once Basco trusts someone, though, he becomes incredibly affectionate. He loves to snuggle up against you completely, weighing in at almost 50 kilos, or he’ll try to sit on your lap. Besides cuddling, Basco really enjoys being together with others. He also loves playing fetch in the yard—when he gets going, he’s all excited and happily hops around before settling down between your legs for a good scratch. Despite his imposing appearance, Basco isn’t a tough macho type. He’d rather avoid other dogs altogether. If they do come too close, he might start barking out of uncertainty. That’s why we’re not placing him with other pets. At first, walking was also quite stressful for Basco. Just putting on a collar or harness used to make him tremble with excitement. But by taking things slowly and calmly, he’s now gotten used to wearing a harness—and even seems to enjoy it! He still finds a collar a bit nerve-wracking, but he’s making great progress there too. Nowadays, Basco walks nicely on a leash outside. Still, he’s not very accustomed to this either. Sometimes he encounters situations he’s not familiar with and looks to you for support—for example, when the leash ends up on the wrong side of a post, you’ll have to help him out a bit. Because Basco has always lived in a calm household and is naturally somewhat insecure, we’re looking for a home without young children. He could be placed with children aged 16 and older. It’s not known whether Basco can stay home alone, so we’re seeking a situation where this can be gradually introduced. Basco has sensitive intestines, so he receives easily digestible food—which we’d also recommend continuing at his new home. In addition, he has spondylosis in his back, for which he receives pain relief medication. The cost of this pain relief is about 100 euros per month. Therefore, the animal shelter will cover these costs for the new owner for a period of six months, paying for Basco’s pain medication. The conditions regarding this arrangement will be discussed during the introduction phase. Deze grote jongen is Basco, een lieve Duitse herder van 8,5 jaar oud (geboren op 01-01-2018). Basco kwam bij ons terecht nadat zijn eigenaar is overleden. Basco is een enorme knuffelkont, maar hij moet je eerst even leren kennen. Hij heeft in zijn leven weinig mensen om zich heen gehad en was vooral gehecht aan zijn eigenaar. Daarnaast leefde hij voornamelijk buiten in de tuin, waardoor veel dingen binnenshuis voor hem nog onbekend zijn. Daarom zoeken wij voor Basco een woning met een tuin, waar hij eventueel ook buiten kan verblijven als hij binnen niet goed zijn draai weet te vinden. Sinds zijn verblijf bij ons leert Basco stap voor stap dat andere mensen ook leuk kunnen zijn. Nieuwe mensen introduceren gaat meestal vrij vlot, maar een toekomstige eigenaar moet er rekening mee houden dat bezoek hem niet direct moet benaderen of willen aaien. Wanneer Basco eenmaal vertrouwen heeft, is hij ontzettend aanhankelijk. Het liefst kruipt hij met zijn bijna 50 kilo volledig tegen je aan of probeert hij op schoot te zitten. Naast knuffelen houdt Basco erg van samen zijn. Hij vindt een renspelletje ook erg leuk. Dan is hij helemaal enthousiast en hupst hij gezellig in het rond om daarna zijn kont weer tussen je benen te parkeren voor een kriebel. Ondanks zijn imposante uiterlijk is Basco geen stoere macho. Andere honden ontwijkt hij liever. Komen ze toch te dichtbij, dan kan hij uit onzekerheid gaan blaffen. Daarom plaatsen wij hem niet bij andere huisdieren. Ook wandelen vond Basco in het begin erg spannend. Alleen al het omdoen van een halsband of tuig zorgde ervoor dat hij begon te trillen van spanning. Door dit rustig op te bouwen is hij inmiddels gewend geraakt aan een tuig en wordt hij er zelfs blij van. Een halsband vindt hij nog wat spannend, maar ook daarin maakt hij mooie stappen. Inmiddels loopt Basco buiten netjes mee aan de lijn. Maar ook hierin is hij niet veel gewend. Soms heeft hij situaties die hij niet kent en zoekt hij steun bij jou. Bijvoorbeeld als de lijn aan de verkeerde kant van een paaltje komt, dan moet je hem even helpen. Omdat Basco altijd in een rustig huishouden heeft gewoond en van nature wat onzeker is, zoeken wij een thuis zonder jonge kinderen. Hij kan geplaatst worden bij kinderen vanaf 16 jaar. Het is niet bekend of Basco alleen thuis kan blijven en daarom zoeken wij een situatie waarin dit rustig opgebouwd kan worden. Basco heeft gevoelige darmen. Daarom krijgt hij licht verteerbare voeding, wat wij ook in zijn nieuwe thuis adviseren voort te zetten. Daarnaast heeft hij spondylose in zijn rug, waarvoor hij pijnstilling krijgt. De kosten van deze pijnstilling is ongeveer 100 euro in de maand. Het dierenopvangcentrum zal daarom de nieuwe eigenaar tegemoet komen, voor een periode van 6 maanden en de pijnstillers voor Basco bekostigen.
