Burek

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 6 years

An animal shelter was supposed to be a rescue for Burko... and it was, but not entirely, only partially... Because for several years he's still in the kennel. An animal shelter should be just a short stop on his way to a better life. For Burko, ending up in an animal shelter was a blessing in disguise, because in the conditions he was previously in, no dog should have been alive. He spent 6 years in a windowless cell, let out occasionally... During that time, no one showed him that a human touch could be pleasant. That a leash means a nice walk and the opportunity to discover the beauty of the world. In the three years at the animal shelter, our guy has obviously made progress. He is still a timid dog, afraid of noise, crowds, touch, but who can blame him? Today he is cheerful, curious, likes being with people. When he sees familiar volunteers, he does a crazy dance of joy on two paws, unique to him. He allows them to gently touch him. He has learned to walk on a leash and slowly trains this skill. Walking is best for him when accompanied by his favorite dog friend Bobik. The guys met in the animal shelter and their friendship was formed. Bobik is a big support for Burko. Therefore, it would be good if Burek ended up in a home where there is already a friendly dog or even dogs. Canine companionship in the new home would definitely give the guy a sense of security. We don't hide that Burko is a dog for a connoisseur 🙂 A patient, understanding, and consistent person, who doesn't expect too much from the dog. Someone who will be willing to continue working on taming the guy. We have great hopes that this sensitive dog, surrounded by love, understanding, and calm, by someone who will ensure him a sense of security, will spread his wings. Will this happen? We don't know. One must be aware that perhaps Burko will never be the kind of dog that you can, for example, hug. Burko is looking for someone who above all wants to save a dog's life, not expecting too much in return. Not expecting the dog to repay him for that. Thinking first of the dog and its needs, not of themselves. We are looking for even a temporary home (then food, veterinary care costs etc. are on our side).

About Burek

What life with Burek looks like

Burek is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Schronisko dla Bezdomnych Zwierząt w Milanówku in Poland.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Burek, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Burek?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko dla Bezdomnych Zwierząt w Milanówku handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Burek on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Burek if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko dla Bezdomnych Zwierząt w Milanówku will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Burek already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Burek isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko dla Bezdomnych Zwierząt w Milanówku early rather than rehoming privately; they know Burek and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
