Adopt Caleta

Podenco · Female · Adult · 4 years

Leo's Shelter Input 13 October 2025: Caleta is a female Podenco. She was found in a residential area. A friend of ours took her in, but it unfortunately did not work out with the dog that was already present, so Caleta had to move to the animal shelter. At first, Caleta was very shy at the animal shelter, which she still is a bit, but it's getting better. If she knows you, she's okay with you coming closer and touching her. She lives in the animal shelter with other dogs, including her companion Kimo, a terrier. Caleta walks nicely on a leash and certainly enjoys long walks. Caleta is a somewhat larger Podenco, possibly a mixed breed of a Podenco Ibicenco. She is a calm dog, not noisy, doesn't bark and has an average energy level. She has been living in a house near the shelter with ten other dogs for half a year. She learned there that she must sleep inside the house, which she found difficult at first, but now she understands this routine. She eats well and does not look into the food bowls of the other dogs to see if there is anything to take. Initially, she does not trust every dog, but eventually she understands how everything works here. A year ago, Caleta was treated with a 30-day course for the tick-borne disease rickettsia, which worked well, and soon blood tests will be done again. Caleta gets along well with people of all ages, both elderly and children, but she needs to get to know them at her own pace and feel safe. She can live in an apartment or a house with an enclosed garden. Caleta is ready for a new step in her life.

About Caleta

What life with Caleta looks like

Caleta is a adult podenco dog waiting at description in AL Ridderkerk.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Caleta, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Caleta?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. description handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Caleta on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Caleta if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — description will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Caleta already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Caleta isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with description early rather than rehoming privately; they know Caleta and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
