Canela

Podenco · Female · Senior · 9 years

In the summer of 2025, Canela arrived at our Spanish partner shelter, La Línea, and the reasons for this are unfortunately unknown to us. The pretty Podenco female dog was born in October 2017 and has a shoulder height of about 50 cm. In January, Canela was allowed to move to a foster home in Berlin, where she has developed wonderfully – now, all she needs is her own family. Canela is a gentle, friendly, and witty female dog who shows herself to be a pleasant and relaxed roommate in everyday life at her foster home. In the apartment, she comes to rest well and is, of course, house-trained. When meeting strangers, she initially meets them calmly, observing them with a little distance. However, her heart is easily won: then she shows her clingy, cuddly side and builds a close bond with her trusted people. Canela enjoys cuddles very much and is happy about every bit of attention – of course, also about the occasional treat. In general, she quickly gets used to new situations, people, or dogs and then shows herself to be calm. She masters car rides well and remains relaxed even on longer trips. With her fellow animals, Canela is exceptionally compatible and lives harmoniously with the dogs at the foster home. Since she is not a high-energy dog, her doggy friends should not be too rambunctious. Her time alone with other dogs already works out problemlessly. She can also live with cats, provided they are confident and dog-savvy. Despite her almost nine years, one should not underestimate Canela: she still has a lot of energy and likes to move. Canela now masters walks in the residential area with bravado and runs beautifully on the leash. On nature walks, however, she feels much more comfortable. She orientates herself well to her primary caregiver and remains responsive. With appropriate training, she can certainly be worked on the topic of free-running in reizarmen, familiar areas. Potential owners should still inform themselves about the characteristics and needs of Podencos beforehand. For Canela, regular free-running in a safe area and contact with fellow animals are important. Canela contains a lot of joie de vivre and will be a wonderful companion for her future people. For Canela, we wish for sensitive and dog-experienced people who will make her acclimation easier with patience and understanding. Her new home should not be in a busy inner-city district of Berlin. The time alone must still be built up step by step. If there are children in the household, they should ideally be at least in primary school age.

About Canela

What life with Canela looks like

Canela is a medium-sized senior podenco dog waiting at Hundehilfe Spanien e.V. in Germany.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Canela, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Canela?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hundehilfe Spanien e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Canela on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Canela if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hundehilfe Spanien e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Canela already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Canela isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hundehilfe Spanien e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Canela and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
