Capitan

Mixed Breed · Male

Our wonderful herd protection dog male dog Capitan appeared one day right in the city. The police were informed, and it would have taken very little for the strong, confident six-year-old (as of 12/2022) to end up in the shelter. Fortunately, our friends from Dolmen Animal found out about the fate of the muscular Mastiff - and now Capitan lives in the small facility of our partner. Capitan is a Mastiff mix and has all the qualities that make a dog suitable for work as a guard. As a family dog or neighborhood watchman, our calm new arrival cannot serve, and if he has a choice between watching attentively in the garden or lying on the couch, Capitan will probably prefer the garden. He is a very confident, majestic dog who appreciates the company of people, but will only properly attach himself to one biped to work with him as a team. Capitan gets along well with other dogs, but he wants to lead and shows no interest in playing with others. He always keeps his eyes on the situation, mediates disputes and tolerates no defiance from the boisterous puppies. One might think that Capitan is a bit grumpy, but essentially he is doing exactly what his breed has been bred for centuries - to be attentive and look for order and peace. Many of our herd protection mixes are actually teddy bears (even though they are usually also very confident and strict guards), Capitan does not belong to this category. He appreciates praise when he has done well, but is not wild about shared TV evenings or similar. For Capitan we are looking for a home where he can fulfill his vocation. A large garden or an enclosed property is a must for future team partners of our showpiece guard. Although Capitan shows no aggression at all, not even against his own "family," we would not place him in a home with small children - and the older ones must at least understand that Capitan is not a playmate. It would be ideal if Capitan had the choice of whether he wanted to stay inside or outside - but we categorically reject pure outdoor or even kennel keeping! Captain is a dream for anyone who seeks a friend who stands by them through thick and thin. Capitan is completely unsuitable for dog sports enthusiasts and also for couch potatoes, he wants to live his own life and is happy with companionship that can accept exactly that. If you are a free spirit and want to give another free spirit a place in your life, you are Captain's match made in heaven and should contact us as soon as possible!

About Capitan

What life with Capitan looks like

Capitan is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Capitan, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Capitan?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Capitan on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Capitan if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Capitan already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Capitan isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Capitan and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
