Carlo

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 7 years

Urgently needed is dog experience with fearful dogs... CARLO has lived in the animal shelter Velingrad since puppyhood. He thus belongs to the long-term residents of the shelter. In terms of his character, Carlo is a wonderful dog soul. But his soul is marked by great fear. The mixed breed dog needs continuous trust-building and ongoing relationship work to give him a feeling of security. This work cannot be carried out in the environment of the shelter. Carlo should get the chance for a less fearful or even fearless dog life. Therefore, we are looking for a patient and loving home for Carlo. A home with people who already have experience living with fearful dogs. Carlo will need a calm environment where work can be done together on the urgently required trust-building. We assume that Carlo will learn to trust in an appropriate environment and grow step by step into a less fearful or even fearless life. His future home should expect that the journey together with Carlo could be very long. The relationship and trust-building should initially have a purely offering character, without pressuring Carlo. A confident dog friend already living in his future home would certainly be helpful in making Carlo's adjustment easier. We are certainly only addressing a limited circle of potential adopters, but we hope that among these few, the right people for Carlo will be found. If you want to give Carlo a chance for a stress-free and happy life and want to work step by step towards this goal with him, we look forward to your sincere inquiry. Adopting a rescue dog always means taking on a special responsibility and can also become a challenge. The dogs come with a backpack of past experiences or unlearned situations and need time to adjust to their new life. If you have a serious interest in adopting mixed breed Carlo, please contact the responsible adoption officer of SALVA Dog Help. We would also be very grateful for the provision of an experienced foster home. The contact details are below. >> Here you can watch Carlo's video

About Carlo

What life with Carlo looks like

Carlo is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Carlo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Carlo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Carlo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Carlo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Carlo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Carlo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Carlo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
