Adopt Chap

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 3 years

Chap, male and approximately 8 months old, is looking for a new home. Unfortunately, his partner passed away recently, and he is now very lonely. He is more of a calm type, quite sociable, but not an extrovert. He is hand-tame, eats out of your hand, and will sometimes sniff around or come up on your lap. On some days, however, he just wants to be left alone. In the two-birdie pair, he was more of the calm type. He has also, however, recently become quite dominant when paired with the other degu, which is around 2.5 to 3.5 years old. We are now looking for a loving home for him, as we unfortunately do not have the time for a potential pairing at the moment. If you are from the Stuttgart area or nearby, that would be great. Note from our shelter: Since Chap is currently in the juvenile phase, we recommend pairing him with a degu that is 2.5 to 3.5 years old and has already passed through the juvenile phase. More information about the juvenile phase can be found in our information sheet.

About Chap

What life with Chap looks like

Chap is a adult mixed breed animal waiting at Deguhilfe Süd e.V. in Obermichelbach.

Every animal has their own temperament and history. The shelter knows Chap far better than any listing can convey — ask about daily routine, ideal household, and what kind of adopter they're hoping for.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Chap, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Chap?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Deguhilfe Süd e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Chap on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Chap if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Deguhilfe Süd e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Chap already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most animals on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Chap isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Deguhilfe Süd e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Chap and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
