Charles

Presa Canario · Male · Senior · 11 years

I am Charles (some call me PRINZ Charles) … and ended up in the animal shelter as a precaution due to a violation of the animal protection law. Now I am searching for a safe, consistent home with very experienced people. I am clever and eager to learn – with me, much can be achieved if leadership and management are right. Would you like to know more about me? I unfortunately do not like strangers at all – trust must be earned with me. To my trusted people, I am friendly and enjoy cuddles – I often find a connection with women faster. Outdoors, I confront unfamiliar people (e.g., passersby, joggers) and dogs aggressively. One should not underestimate me: I know how big and strong I am. I do not like children at all – neither on walks nor at home. I can walk on a leash with a muzzle and go for walks well if I can maintain about a 5-meter distance from other dogs. With compatible female dogs, I warm up quickly, but I live better alone in a new home. I hunt cats and mostly ignore birds. My great love is water: swimming and jumping into the pool make me incredibly happy. I can also be left alone for hours at a time. I wish for … very dog-experienced, confident people who have experience with large, demanding dogs. An ideally rural home (with a securely fenced yard), child-free, and without other dogs would be best. Important are consistent safety and muzzle management, clear rules from the start, and time: In a new environment and with light changes, I react insecurely and stressed, so my adjustment period will be longer. Please plan several meet-and-greet visits at the animal shelter. I will not be rehomed as a guard dog, but as a family member that wants to be close to its people.

Hinweis: Die

About Charles

What life with Charles looks like

Charles is a large senior presa canario dog waiting at Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg in Berlin.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

Note from the shelter: Requires muzzle training, security management, no contact with children, needs gradual introduction to new environments, requires multiple meet-and-greet visits

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Charles, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Charles?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Charles on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Charles if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Charles already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Charles isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Charles and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
